We're excited to announce the Line-Up for the first Wikiendi Live! concert of the year. Mark your calendars for Saturday, 25 February and get ready to see great performances by Makadem, the modern Benga superstar from Kenya, BBRAVE, a Ghana-based DJ bringing Afrobeats from across the continent, and Jhikoman, Bagamoyo's reggae legend. See you at Nafasi!!!
Big up to the Ketebul Music and Singing Wells team for documenting Tanzanian folk music! Also, wonderful that they're making a special focus on Mzee Nyunyusa -- all too often "traditional" music projects obscure the artists behind the music as though the tradition itself was some innate thing and not a dynamic art form made by creative artists.
"They also intend to revive the memory of the famous Ngoni drummer, the late Mzee Morris Nyunyusa, who, despite being blind, made memorable compositions, some still played by Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation as their signature tunes."
The Singing Wells Project (SWP), a collaboration between a London-based record label, Abubilla Music and Kenya's Ketebul Music has pitched camp in Tanzania this year, seeking to identify, preserve and promote traditional music. Just back from a reconnaissance trip in Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Chalinz...
"Strut is extremely proud to present a definitive collection of recordings from one of Tanzania’s most revered but short-lived bands of the 1970s, Sunburst. Covering their entire output from 1973 to 1976, this first retrospective features music from their 45 RPM singles “Moto Moto” and “TFC,” as well as their sole album, Ave Africa, and an unreleased radio session recorded in Tanzania in 1973."
We're very excited that this retrospective on the Tanzanian band Sunburst has finally been announced! This project was initiated by David Tinning (while he was at the Tanzania Heritage Project) and Jumanne Thomas.
THP helped contribute digitization services to the project and will assist the musicians in receiving their royalties from the sale of the album.
We're proud to be involved in this project and hope you will make a pre-order now!
